UX/UI redesign of the LMS in the age of AI

UX/UI redesign of the LMS in the age of AI

Context

Studi is a major player in online education, offering degree and certification programmes to thousands of learners each year. At the heart of its educational system, its LMS structures the learning experience.

However, challenges such as low course completion rates and limited user engagement highlighted the need for a complete overhaul of the user experience and technical architecture.

UX/UI Designer

Date

September 2023 - February 2024

The Problem :

How can you optimise your Learning Management System (LMS) to improve the user experience, increase course completion rates and encourage self-learning ?

Discovery

Using a qualitative approach to usage (interviews, studies) and a quantitative approach (data, statistics), we collected and analysed the data gathered in order to identify opportunities and avenues for innovation, working equally on their desirable, acceptable, sustainable and feasible aspects.

With the emergence of generative artificial intelligence, Studi wanted to anticipate changes in its digital ecosystem and rethink its LMS to turn it into a support tool that could offer a more intuitive learning experience.

Several questions arose : What are the real needs of users? What are the best practices in the sector ? What are the different learning methodologies and their benefits ? What engagement mechanisms can be put in place ?

The project was based on a user-centred approach, combining UX research, strategic design and technological innovation. Our research strategy enabled us to gain a comprehensive overview and understanding of the subject.

Define

An in-depth immersion phase enabled us to analyse existing pathways and gather feedback from more than 30 students, tutors and educational managers.

The interviews taught us three things :

- The importance of the human factor
- The importance of guided learning

- The importance of clear information architecture

We identified the main challenges faced by learners and grouped them into four distinct personas. Each profile represents a different learning path, allowing us to tailor the platform's UX/UI to effectively address specific needs and pain points.

Our aim was to make it a tool for support and engagement, rather than just a technical platform.

Project Goals :

Support learners in their progress (by guiding them towards content that is more relevant to their level of proficiency, optimising their training time, etc.), promoting a sense of community (by facilitating mutual support within classes, providing rich resources, etc.) and making courses and modules dynamic (by offering short, varied and structured modules that are, above all, multi-modal, etc.).

Design

We observed that learners feel isolated and need better support. They feel a lack of interaction, which prevents human exchange and sharing.

Many users find it difficult to find and understand the available learning resources, and the interface was not very intuitive, making navigation discouraging.

Co-design workshops were then held to formalise several scenarios for the evolution of the LMS, which were tested with users to measure their perceived value. Particular attention was paid to the relational dimension of AI - how it can assist, encourage or reframe without dehumanising the experience.

Our ambition was to design a more intuitive, human and intelligent learning experience, where AI supports pedagogy without replacing it.

Delivery

To design the new version of this LMS, we adopted a component-based approach to ensure scalability, consistency and an effective user experience.

This step allowed us to focus on usability, information hierarchy and navigation patterns before refining the visual details.

The approach enabled us to rethink key interactions between learners and the platform: simplified navigation, enhanced tutoring, personalised recommendations and integrated engagement tools.

Our goal was to strengthen the relationship between students and tutors through increased personalisation, while streamlining the learning journey and promoting individual success.
