Uses of 3D

Uses of 3D

Context

Hermès is a French luxury goods company renowned for its craftsmanship, excellence in its trades and constant commitment to quality and sustainability. Combining tradition and innovation, the company is gradually integrating digital technologies to support the creation, production and transmission of its expertise.

In this context, this project focuses on structuring and governing the use of 3D technology at Hermès in order to harmonise practices, secure processes and support the various trades in the consistent and controlled adoption of these tools.

The Problem :

What are the possible uses of 3D for a company like Hermès ?

The promotion of projects is limited for reasons of confidentiality.

Discovery

In a context where the use of 3D at Hermès is rapidly expanding but remains fragmented, we had to use qualitative and quantitative research methods, collecting and analysing data to identify opportunities, challenges and avenues for innovation.

We found that there are a multitude of local initiatives without an overall vision, leading to a dispersion of skills and tools.

Several issues were therefore identified :

- A need to create a collective dynamic through a community

- A need for structure in the management of 3D projects

- A need to streamline storage and tools to avoid duplication and data loss

By properly structuring the governance of 3D uses, it would be possible to move from a phase of artisanal experimentation to a phase of controlled industrialisation of 3D.

Define

With the uses of 3D technology rapidly expanding, and with a desire to stand out from the existing market, the central idea was to ‘structure the present to better prepare for the future'.

Three areas of solutions were defined :

- The need to create an exchange network to break down silos between different professions (leather goods, fashion, retail, etc.)

- Establishing a clear methodology for prioritising and tracking 3D creation requests

- Defining storage protocols (DAM/PLM) and common file formats to ensure the interoperability of 3D assets

Project Goals :

How should 3D usage be structured ?

Design

Implementation translates into concrete tools and processes :

- Recommendation of community tools to centralise best practices, monitor technological developments, etc.

- Proposal of a validation process by creating a workflow with prioritisation criteria based on business impact and technical feasibility

- Recommendation of storage architecture to facilitate the reuse of resources

Delivery

The delivery plan is designed to be implemented in stages to ensure adoption by the teams. We therefore presented and detailed the various implementation phases.

An important point was to highlight the expected benefits in terms of time savings and efficiency in particular.
